Etymology:
"The term refers to ‘bogan’ (rusticus), a derogatory Australian and slang word used to describe a person whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplify values and behaviour considered unrefined or unsophisticated. While collecting the second isolate of this fungus in a park in Willagee, Perth, a bogan man accosted the authors, leaving a lasting impression."
